Stress Management

Stress is a part of our everyday lives, however ongoing high levels of stress impact on our ability to cope and function effectively. Stress is the way the body adjusts to change.

This could be negative events such as loss of a job or a happy event such as getting married. The fight or flight mode is activated when the body perceives a threat with accompanying physical, psychological and behavioural responses. This includes physical such as rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, dry mouth and muscle aches and pains.

Psychological symptoms may include a reduction in the ability to concentrate or make decisions, irritability or anger. The individual may engage in uncharacteristic behaviours such as avoiding normal responsibilities or self-medicating with drugs, alcohol or food. Experiencing these responses over an extended period of time puts pressure on our relationships, performance at work and our general enjoyment of life.

Unpacking these responses in a safe space with a caring professional, and with the use of different strategies such as mindfulness, can help to regain emotional balance.
